3 more ‘criminals’ killed in gunfights

Staff Reporter :Three alleged ‘criminals’ have been killed in gunfights with law enforcers in Dhaka, Jessore and Comilla on Sunday. All of them were accused of murders and other crimes. Of them, a youth was killed in a gunfight with police at Taltola under Sher-e-Bangla Nagar Police Station in the capital in the early hours.Tejgaon Zone DC Biplob Kumar Sarkar said the deceased was identified as Jasim Uddin, 23, son of Abdur Razzak. President and Secretary Islami Chhatar Shibir Abdul Jabbar and Atiqur Rahman, however, claimed that Jasim Uddin was one of their activists. They also alleged that the Detective Branch police killed him in the name of encounter.Police said the body was sent to Dhaka Medical College and Hospital for autopsy. In another incident, a team of RAB-6 in Jessore detained Raju, the accused in five cases, from Garikhana road in Jessore district town around 9:00pm Saturday. Later, a gunfight erupted when criminals lurked in Kazipur rail crossing area opened fire targeting RAB men on their way to recover firearms along with Raju. The lawmen retaliated with gunshots, leaving Raju bullet-wound, Camp Company Commander Major Ashraf Uddin said.Other criminals, however, managed to flee the spot, he added. Later, the injured was taken to Jessore 250-bed General Hospital around 4:30am where duty doctor declared him dead.RAB also recovered a foreign-made Revolver, three round of bullets, two chopper, 25 chocolate bomb, two bottles liquor, four bottles phensedyl and five pieces of yaba tablets from the spot.In Comilla, another suspected criminal was killed in a ‘gunfight’ with police in Bhatpara area of Sadar South Upazila of the district early Sunday.The gunfight between criminals and police took place around 2:30am. Later, police rushed the body to Comilla Medical College Hospital morgue around 3:00am. Sadar South Thana Officer-in-Charge Proshanta Paul said police also recovered a pistol and several round of bullets from the spot. Swapan was accused in 28 cases including Juba League leader Mostak murder, he added.Meanwhile, a total of nine alleged ‘criminals’ were killed in gunfights with law enforcers in the last five days. Earlier, two activists of Islami Chhatra Shibir and an activist of Jamaat-e-Islami were killed and three others were injured in alleged ‘shootouts’ with police in Rajshahi, Jessore and Comilla on Friday.A ‘criminal’ was killed in a reported encounter with police in Purba Manipur area at the city’s Mirpur on Saturday. Besides, two suspected ‘criminals’ were killed in a ‘gunfight’ with members of RAB in the city’s Jatrabari area early Wednesday.
