Three students of Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (BUET) were placed on a five-day remand each on Wednesday in connection with the murder of Abrar Fahad.
The three accused are: Moniruzzaman Monir, 21, a third-year student of the BUET’s Water Resources Engineering Department, Akash Hossain, 21, a third-year student of Civil Engineering Department, and Shamsul Arefin Rafat, 21, second year student of Mechanical Engineering Department. Metropolitan Magistrate Tofazzal Hossain passed the remand order when Detective Branch (DB) Inspector Wahiduzzaman, also the Investigation Ifficer (IO) of the case, produced them before the court with a 10-day remand prayer.
During the hearing, Monir and Akash denied the allegations brought against them saying that they were not present at the room of Sher-e-Bangla hall when Abrar was killed there. They went there later on.
Abrar, a second-year student of Electrical and Electronic Engineering department of Buet, died after he was brutally beaten allegedly by some Chhatra League men at dormitory of the university on Monday. Later, Abrar’s father Barkat Ullah filed a murder case against 19 with the Chawkbazar Police Station.
The incident triggered a firestorm of protests on campuses across the country. Many took to the social media to demand justice for Abrar murder.
Law enforcers suspect, Abrar was attacked because of one of his recent Facebook posts, which seemed critical of some recent deals with India.
A total of 13 students of the BUET were arrested in connection with the case filed by Abrar’s father over the murder. The rest of the 10 members of Buet unit BCL are also placed on five-day remand on Tuesday.
