Three men and their wives have been sentenced to six months in jail in Chittagong for torturing their 70-year-old mother on Wednesday.
AKM Nasiruddin, chief metropolitan magistrate of Chittagong, announced the verdict.
The court also fined them Tk 500 each and they have to serve additional ten days behind bars if they fail to pay the fine, said Habibur Rahman Azad, a lawyer who represented the plaintiff.
The convicts are Nur Uddin, Nur Hossain, Nur Islam, Parveen Akhter, Shamim Akter and Daisy Akhter.
The three sons and their wives put pressure on their mother-Rawshan Ara Begum-to bequeath a piece of land to them.
As the elderly woman refused to do so, they beat her, according to Rahman.
The incident took place in 2014 in Madhya Halishahar, according to the prosecution. Later, an attempted murder case was filed with the metropolitan magistrate’s court over the abuse of the woman.
