3 killed in city, Savar ‘shootouts’

Three people, including two suspected kidnappers, were killed in separate incidents of ‘shootout’ in the city and Savar on the outskirts of the capital on Monday.
In the capital, two alleged kidnappers were killed in a ‘shootout’ with Rapid Action Battalion (Rab) members in Kadamtali area in the afternoon. The deceased were identified as Washim, 55, and Sangram, 45. Tipped off that a gang of kidnappers was torturing two victims after abducting several people at the house at Alambagh, a team of Rab-10 went to the spot around 12:15 pm, said Lt Col Mohammad Abul Kalam Azad, Director of Intelligence of Rab Headquarters. Sensing the presence of the elite force members, the kidnappers opened fire on them, prompting the law enforcers to fire back which triggered a gunfight. Washim and Sangram were caught in the line of fire and got injured. Later, they were taken to Mitford Hospital where doctors pronounced them dead. Three Rab members were also injured during the gunfight. Two pistols were recovered from the spot.
In Savar, a suspected robber was killed in a ‘shootout’ between police and his cohorts on Dhaka-Aricha highway at Ram Chandrapur in Savar in the early hours.
On secret information that a gang of robbers was taking preparations to commit robberies, a police team went to the spot around 4 am, said officer-in-charge of Savar Model Police Station Mostafa Kamal. Sensing the presence of the law enforcers, the bandits opened fire on police, forcing them to retaliate, triggering a gunfight. At one stage, an unidentified ‘robber’ was caught in the line of fire and injured. Later, he was rushed to Savar Upazila Health Complex where doctors declared him dead.
Four policemen, including sub-inspector Rafiqul Islam of the police station, were injured during the incident. Of them, Rafiqul was admitted to Enam Medical College Hospital. Police recovered a sharp weapon and a bomb from the spot.
