The first surgery on the right hand of the Satkhira girl Muktamoni, who has been suffering from Hemangioma disease, was done successfully at the Dhaka Medical College Hospital on Saturday.
“Tumour weighing around three kgs has been removed from Mukta’s right hand,” Professor Dr Abul Kalam told journalists after the operation yesterday.
Muktamoni, a 12-year-old girl’ right hand infected with Hemangioma disease at her early age, has been under going treatment at the DMCH since July 11.
A seven-member team led by Burn and Plastic Surgery Unit Professor Abul Kalam conducted the operation from 8:15am to 10:45am yesterday.
The physician added the tumor developed in Muktamoni’s blood vessels.
Dr Abul Kalam further said, “The girl is yet not out of danger. She has been kept under observation in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU).” The doctor also said at least five to six more operations are needed for Muktamoni as a number of tumors still remain in her vascular.
“And she will be rested seven to 10 days between two surgeries,'” he said.
A 14-member medical board at a meeting on August 8 decided to conduct operation on Muktamoni after a biopsy report exposed the existence of the tumour in blood vessels on her right hand.
The government took the responsibility of bearing Muktamoni’s medical expenses after her story was reported in the media.
According to Mukta’s medical history, her parents observed a small swelling on her chest when she was three years old. After a few days, marble-like protrusions appeared underneath her left armpit.
Dr Samanta Lal said it is not the last surgery on Muktamoni, she will need a series of surgical operations to get cured as there are a number of tumors in her vascular.
The next steps will be taken after monitoring Muktamoni’s condition for four days, he said, adding that they have a plan of removing at least one tumor every week.
Fifteen surgeons of DMCH Burn and Plastic Surgery Unit and seven members of Anesthesiology Department, including Professor Sajjad Khandakar and Director of Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) Dr Zulfiqar Lenin were present
