At least three people, including an assistant presiding officer, were injured in a clash ensued over snatching ballot boxes from a center at Sundarpur union under Fatikchhari upazila of the district on Saturday (April 23).
Police opened fire when supporters of ruling Awami League chosen chairman candidate allegedly tried to snatch ballot boxes from Ekkhulia Government Primary School center of the union around 2:00pm.During the time, two police members and an assistant presiding officer were injured. Voting was also stopped here.
Presiding officer Toufiqul Islam told media that supporters of a chairman candidate attacked them to snatch ballot boxes.Later, supporters of other candidates came and opened firing. Police opened fire to bring the situation under control, leaving two cops and assistant presiding officer Imon injured with bullet-hit, he added The injured were taken to hospital, he added.
However, additional police super of Chittagong (special branch) Kazi Abdul Awal said they were not informed about any such incident in Sundapur Union under Fatikkchari upazila.
