UNB, Dhaka :Three High Court judges, hearing the death references and appeals in the BDR carnage case, on Thursday asked the government to provide special security to them. The three-member HC bench, comprising Justice Md Shawkat Hossain, Justice M Abu Zafor Siddique and Justice M Nazrul Islam Talukder passed the suo moto order as they did not get the security from police even after seeking it through the Supreme Court registrar office. The Home Secretary, the Law Secretary, the Inspector General of Police and the Dhaka Metropolitan Police Commissioner have been directed to ensure proper security to the judges within seven days of receipt of the copy of the order, said deputy attorney general KM Zahid Sarwar Kajal.Earlier, the HC bench sent several letters to the police administration through the SC registrar office seeking security. However, no step has yet been taken in this regard, said sources at the HC. Talking to reporters, Attorney General Mahbubey Alam said the HC bench issued the directive for their security as the BDR carnage case is an important one and the hearing on the death references and appeals is now at the final stage. On November 5, 2013, a special court of Dhaka sentenced 152 people, including BDR DAD Touhidul Islam, to death and 423 others to different jail terms, acquitting 271 in the country’s largest-ever case of killing at the Peelkhana headquarters of now-defunct Bangladesh Rifles (BDR) in February 2009.
