At least three persons drowned and 10 others went missing after two trawlers collided head-on in the mid Sitalakkhya river at Kawraid union of Sreepur upazila in Gazipur on Friday.
Locals recovered the bodies from the river with the help of Fire Service and Civil Defence members.
Of the victims, one was identified as
Sabekun Nahar, 8, daughter of Ashraf Uddin Sheikh and another was Asma Begum, 32, hailed from Mymensingh.
The third was identified as Rahima Khatun, 42, wife of Rahim Uddin from Pagla of Narayanganj.
UNO of Sreepur, Sadiqur Rahman said at least 10 passengers were missing following the capsize. The rest of the passengers, however, managed to swim ashore.
Officer-in-Charge [OC] of Sreepur Police Station Mahsin Ul Kadir said that the engine run trawlers collided head-on around 1:00pm and went under deep water due to huge impact of collision.
“The rescue operation is going on. Locals and members of Fire Service and Civil Defence have carried out search and rescue operation,” the OC said.
Both the trawlers were salvaged in the afternoon, said Jashimuddin Mir, a member of Kawraid union. “Ten people are missing while 18 others managed to swim ashore.”
