3 cops among 5 indicted in Pallabi murder case

The Metropolitan Sessions Judge’s Court of Dhaka on Sunday afternoon framed charges against five persons, including three former policemen of Pallabi Police Station, in the murder case filed in connection with the death of a youth in police custody.
Judge Kamrul Hossain Molla of the court fixed May 16 for recording the depositions of the witnesses in the case. The accused are Zahidur Rahman Zahid, the then SI of Pallabi Police Station, ASI Rashed, ASI Kamruzzaman alias Mintu and police sources Sumon and Russel.
The prosecution story says that Ishtiaq Ahmed Jony, his brother Imtiaz Hassan Rocky and three others were detained by police on  
February 9, 2014, when they were conducting a pre-wedding programme of Jony’s friend at Irani camp of Pallabi.
Informer Sumon and his friends Russell and Nasim called police after Jony slapped Sumon for misbehaving with women during the programme. Jony was allegedly tortured and rushed to the National Hospital. After his condition deteriorated, he was taken to Dhaka Medical College Hospital, where the physicians declared him dead. After the incident, slain Jony’s brother Rocky lodged a case against eight persons, including Zahid on August 7.
A metropolitan magistrate conducted a judicial inquiry and found Zahid and four others’ involvement in the incident. Zahid was also made accused of being involved in the custodial death of a garment-waste trader of Mirpur.
The indicted policemen and two sources pleaded not guilty in the incident and demanded justice after Judge read out the charges against them. Of the accused, two are in police custody and two secured bail from the court. The remaining accused is on the run.
