The Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) on Saturday arrested five persons, including three policemen of Bhatara Police Station, in the capital on charge of demanding ransom from the family members of a kidnapped a businessman.
The victim person has been identified as Shahjahan Shamsu, while the detained persons have been identified as Assistant Sub-Inspector (ASI) Sirajul Islam and Kawsar, constable Rahman, driver Asaduzzman and a woman named Barsha, police said.
Bhatara Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Sarwar Alam said that RAB members conducted a drive in the capital’s Kuril Bishwa Road area based on secret information early in the morning and arrested them for their alleged involvement in the abduction.
Shahjahan Shamsu’s uncle Abul Hossain filed a General Diary (GD) with Khilkhet Police Station in this connection. Later he informed it to RAB-1, the OC said.
He said that the arrested persons demanded Tk 1,00,000 as ransom from his maternal uncle Abul Hossain.
He further said that the Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) suspended the policemen for their reported link with the kidnapping incident. The arrested persons have been sent to jail.
