3 BD-origin women win UK polls

The three Bangladesh-origin candidates– Rushanara Ali, Tulip Siddiq and Dr Rupa Huq — were elected in the Parliamentary polls in the UK from the Labour Party. The polls were held on Thursday.
Rushanara Ali has won her second spell in the British parliament in the much-hyped May 7 polls. She retained her Bethnal Green and Bow seat with a massive 24,317-vote lead over her Conservative contender. Conservative candidate Matthew Smith got 8,070.
Rushanara Ali became the first Bangladeshi MP following her win from this constituency in the 2010 election. She had defeated her nearest rival by a margin of 11,000 votes in that election. She resigned from the Labour frontbench to abstain from the House motion for permitting military action in Iraq in September 2014.
According to the polls result, Tulip Siddiq, daughter of Sheikh Rehana, won in the Hampstead and Kilburn constituency from Labour Party bagging 23,977 votes while her Conservative counterpart Simon Marcus’ got 22,839 votes.
Dr Rupa Huq reclaimed London’s Ealing Central and Acton constituency by securing 22,002 votes while her rival Conservative Party-backed Angie Bray obtained 21,728 votes.
The other Labour Party contenders were Anwar Babul Miah in the Welwyn Hatfield in Hertfordshire constituency, Marina Ahmad in Beckenham, Ali Akhlakul Islam in Luton and Amran Hussain in North-East Hampshire.
