3.80 lakh people suffering from Osteoporosis in BD

A survey revealed that three percent population in Bangladesh have been suffering from Osteoporosis disease.
In this regard experts suggested to be proactive and to take proper care of bones from early ages to prevent bone weakening and injuries in the later stages of life.
‘From the very early age everyone have to be very cautious and have to do physical exercise with proper diet to avoid the bone problem,’ suggested Prof M Nazrul Islam of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University (BSMMU), key speaker at a press conference on Saturday.
Bangladesh Rheumatology Society (BRS) organized the event at Dhaka Reporters’ Unity auditorium to mark the World Osteoporosis Day 2014 which falls on October 20 with the slogan ‘Real men build their strength from within’.
“According to a report of International Osteoporosis Foundation (IOF), there are at least three lac 80 thousand people have been suffering Osteoporosis, a bone disease in the country,” said the speaker adding, “at least one in five men and one women in three suffer a fracture due to osteoporosis in their remaining lifetimes.”
National Prof Shahla Khatun was the chief guest of the programme while President of Diabetic Association of Bangladesh Prof A K Azad Khan spoke among others with Chairman of Rheumatology Department of BSMMU Prof Syed Atiqul Haq in the chair.
“Osteoporosis is called the silent epidemic because of its symptomless development and the lack of public awareness,” said President of Diabetic Association of Bangladesh Prof A K Azad Khan.
Prof Nazrul explained about the disease, “The literal meaning of the word is “porous bone” that causes a reduction in the density and quality of the bones, which increases the risk of fractures.”
