The second phase of Biswa Ijtema, the largest Muslim congregation after Hajj, began on the bank of the Turag River at Tongi on the outskirts of the capital on Friday, four days after the first phase took place.
The three-day congregation, also called the World Muslims’ Congregation, started formally with religious sermons after Fajr prayers. The congregation will end on Sunday with the Akheri munajat.
Lakhs of Muslim devotees from home and abroad converged on the Turag bank to join the religious event.
Besides, thousands of devotees took part in the Juma prayers blocking roads and highways.
Liberation War Affairs Minister AKM Mozammel Huq, local MP Md. Zahid Ahsan Russel, Gazipur Police Super Harun-or-Rashid and acting mayor of Gazipur City Corporation Asadur Rahman Kiron took part in the Juma prayers held from 1:40pm.
Meanwhile, police arrested some 152 Rohingyas from in and around the Ijtema ground, said the SP. They will be sent back to their country through legal process, the SP added.
Some 1,527 foreign devotees from several countries, including South Africa, Russia, the USA, Italy, Kenya, Malaysia, Myanmar, New Zealand, Singapore, Sweden, France, Australia, Senegal, Saudi Arabia, the UAE, Qatar, China and Mali reached in the Ijtema ground on the first day of the second phase Ijtema.
Police arrested a young man, Ali Munsi, 27, while trying to enter the pavilion of foreign  
devotees wearing a burqa (veil) on Thursday night, said officer-in-charge of Tongi Model Police Station Firoz Talukdar.
As in the first phase, Islamic scholars from different countries delivered sermons which were instantly interpreted into Bangla, English and a few other languages.
People from 16 districts attended the second phase Biswa Ijtema.
Ijtema is being held in two phases from 2012 to ease accommodation problem.
Tight security measures have been taken for the event while several thousand members of different law enforcement agencies will remain deployed in Tongi.
The first phase of Biswa Ijtema was held at the same venue on January 13-15. Devotees from 16 districts attended the 1st phase of Ijtema.
