2nd day of Jamaat hartal ignored

The second day of the countrywide 48-hour hartal, called by Jamaate Islami was totally gnored by the people of Chittagong yesterday.
Jamaat Islami called the countrywide 48-hour hartal in protest against upholding the verdict of death sentence to Jamaat leader Kamruzzaman for his crime against humanity during the War of Liberation in 1971 by the supreme court on Monday.
Chittagong Metropolitan and District police control room sources said there was no report of any untoward incident from any part of the city and district during the hartal hours.
Chittagong city and district police in a series of drives detained 12 activists of BNP-Jamaat-Shibir from different areas of Chittagong city and district on Monday and Tuesday. Official sources said, a total 12 platoons of Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) were deployed in three upazilas of the district to avert possible violence during the hartal hours. Chittagong Metropolitan police and district police also deployed additional 3,500 police personnel in the city and district to maintain law and order situation strictly. Police and eye witnesses said that there was no picketing and procession by the supporters of hartal and blockade.
Police and eye-witnesses said the situation in the city and district during hartal was almost normal as plying of all modes of transport was as usual.Even most of the streets were seen with traffic jam.
