A Dhaka court on Monday afternoon granted bail to quota reform leader Rashed Khan and seven other students in connection with three cases filed with Shahbagh Police Station over vandalism, assaulting and preventing police from discharging their duties.
Earlier in the day, a Dhaka court granted bail to another 21 student activists of the quota reform movement who were arrested on different dates in connection with four cases filed with the same police station, over vandalism of Dhaka University VC’s house, assaulting police and preventing them from discharging their duties.
Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Md Saifuzzaman Hero passed the order after the students lawyers submitted separate petitions seeking bail in the cases.
With this, the total of 29 students were granted bail yesterday.
After repeated appeal of civil society people to release the recently arrested students before Eid, the government is handling the issue softly. As a result, almost all arrested quota reform students, including leaders, got bail a day after the bail of 42 students of different public and private universities.
The public and private university students were arrested in connection with vandalism during the recent students protest for safe roads. Metropolitan Magistrate Md Sarafuzzaman Ansari passed
the order after the lawyers of eight arrested students submitted eight separate petitions seeking bail in the cases.
Those who were granted bail are Rashed Khan, Atikur Rahman, Torikul Islam, Faruk Hasan, Shakhawat Hossain Rony alias Ratul, Moshiur Rahman, Jashim Uddin Akash and Sohel Ahmed.
In February, students of different public universities and jobseekers, under the banner of Bangladesh Sadharan Chhatra Adhikar Sangrakkhan Parishad, started the movement demanding a reform in the quota system in government jobs.
Amid countrywide agitation, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina on April 11 announced all quotas in civil service would be abolished.
As no gazette notification was issued, the protesters began boycotting classes and examinations in all universities and colleges from May 14.
The movement lost momentum following attacks on demonstrators allegedly by Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) activists and arrests of some of its leaders.
