285 accident prone areas across country

Bangladesh Highway Police and Accidents Research Institute (ARI) of Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (BUET) have identified 285 road accident prone areas across the country.
Such accident prone areas witnessed major fatal road crashes in the recent times.
According to Bangladesh Highway police report, of the 231 accident prone areas across the country, 36 are in Cummilla region, 111 in Gazipur zone, 62 in Bogura region and 22 in Madaripur region.
While Accidents Research Institute (ARI) of BUET has identified 54 hazardous intersections in different areas in the capital such as Jatrabari, Farmgate, Bijay Sarani, Saarc Foara, Paltan, Shahbagh, Shonir Akhra, Abdullahpur, Kakoli, Sayedabad, GPO and Shapla Chattar.
The ARI estimated 54 accident-prone intersections are Jatrabari, Farmgate, Sayedabad, Shoni Akhra Crossing, Staff Road Crossing, Topkhana-Purna Paltan, Sonargaon-Panthapth-ETV, Shapla Chattar, Cantonment Zia Colony Gate, Progoti Sarani (Badda), Osmani Uddyan, Jasim Uddin Road Crossing, Kakoli, Kuril Bishwa Road, Tongi Diversion Road, Bijay Sarani, Shahbagh, Mohakhali, Postagola, Hatkhola Road, Kakrail, Moghbazar, New Eskaton, Malibag Crossing, Rokeya Sarani, Hotel Sheraton, GPO, Mirpur-10, New Airport Road, Kakrail Traffic Signal, New Market, Joar Shahara, DIT Extn Road, Motijheel, Manik Mia Avenew, Gulistan, Shyamoli, Mirpur Road, Mouchak, Green Road, Shat Rasta Round Circle, Mohakhali Crossing, Asad Gate, Ramna, Katabon, Baily Road, Bongshal Crossing, Tikatuli, Tussel Square, Sugandha Crossing, Manik Mia Avenue-Indira Road, Flying Club Crossing and Rainbow Crossing.
At Jatrabari intersection alone, 105 people were killed between 2009 and 2014 while Shahbagh intersection claimed 48 peoples’ lives during the same period, ARI sources said.
Kazi Md Saifun Newaz, an Assistant Professor of the ARI, said, “We have identified 54 accident prone intersections in the city and it had sent recommendation to communication ministry in September 2008. But the authorities did not show any effective step in this regard.”
He said, “Footpaths and walkways in many areas have been occupied by hawkers and vendors, forcing commuters to walk on the busy roads. Besides, drivers always remain engaging in competition to boar more passengers targeting to earn more money pushing passengers and pedestrians in accidents risky.”
Bangladesh Fire Service and Civil Defense (BFCD) report said, “At least 229 people were killed in road accidents in the capital in 2015 while 401 in 2016. “
“A total of 3,250 people were killed in Dhaka City in six years while 1,643 people lost their lives in road accidents in 54 accident-porn intersections.” Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) sources said.
Passengers’ Welfare Association Secretary General Mozammel Haque Chowdhury told The New Nation, “There is lack of adequate foot over bridges on the right places. As a result, the roundabouts are increasingly becoming riskier.”
 He also said that the need for implementation traffic rules by providing united facilities.
