283 poor applied for legal services in Gaibandha

A total of 283 distressed and poor men including women applied for legal aid services free of cost through the district legal aid office last six months from January to June this year.
This was disclosed by senior assistant judge and also district legal aid officer M. Rawshan Alam in a quarterly coordination meeting at the conference room of the district judgeship of the town here on Wednesday evening.
District Legal Aid Committee (DLAC) arranged the meeting in association with SKS Foundation under its Strengthening Community Legal Services in Northern Bangladesh project funded by UKaid and Community Legal Services while district and sessions judge and chairman of DLAC Rasheda Sultana presided over the ceremony.
The meeting was also addressed, among others, by Bicharak of Nari o Shishu Nirjatan Daman Tribunal Ratneshwor Bhatacharjwa, additional district and sessions judge Shariful Islam, chief judicial magistrate M. Shahidullah,additional police super M. Faruque Hossain, Ballamjhar UP chairman Jahedul Islam Jhantu, and programme coordinator Sarder Lutful Kabir Saju.
The speakers in their speeches stressed the need for reaching the legal aid services to the grassroots alongside expediting the services towards the poor and distressed victims for protecting their fundamental rights.
Importance should be given on bringing close coordination between the
works of all the development organizations and judiciary aimed at building a network to earn positive result in legal aid services, they also said.
Earlier, the overall activities of the project were presented by assistant programme coordinator Amal Kumar Pramanik through multimedia projector and said the project is being implemented in Sadar, Palashbari, Sadullapur,Sundarganj and Fulchhari upazilas from July, 2014.
The number of applicant is increasing day by day for conducting different awareness, motivational and publicity programmes among the people of the district through active participation of all the concerned.
District and sessions judge Rasheda Sultana in her concluding speeches
said entire people are equal to the eye of the law so emphasis should be given on bringing all the victimized people under the legal aid coverage whatever and whenever they need.

A good number of district, upazila and union legal aid committee members including the journalists took part in the meeting.
