Members of Rapid Action Battalion (Rab) have arrested three people along with 28 lakh Yaba tablets from Dhaka and Chittagong.
The Yaba recovery and the arrest were made during drives conducted from Sunday till Monday morning.
The arrestees were identified as Ali Ahmed, 52, son of Fakir Mohammad of Satkania upazila, Hamid Ullah, 32, son of Abdul Shukkur of Patia upazila in
Chittagong district, and Mahiuddin, 35, son of Azizul Haque of Kaukhali upazila in Rangamati district.
At a press briefing at the Rab headquarters on Monday, Rab Director General Benazir Ahmed said a team of the elite force conducted a drive in the Bay of Bengal under Chittagong on Sunday afternoon and arrested Ali Ahmed, the ringleader of a Yaba smuggling syndicate, and Hamid Ullah along with a trawler after a hot chase.
The Rab-7 team recovered 27.50 lakh Yaba pills from the trawler. Following interrogation of the arrestees, the Rab members came to know that their associate Mahiuddin was heading towards Dhaka with a Yaba consignment.
Based on the information, a Rab team conducted a drive in the Airport Railway Station area of the capital around 8am on Monday and arrested Mahiuddin along with 50,000 Yaba tablets.
During primary interrogation, Ali Ahmed said he used to run Yaba trading under the cover of developer company ‘Ekushey Properties’. He used to bring Yaba tablets from a Myanmar national through Chittagong.
Rab sources said during anti-drug drives from January 1 to January 18, the elite force sized 92 lakh Yaba tablets, 19,540 kgs of heroin, 0.428 kgs of cocaine, 147,924 bottles of Phensidyl syrup, 7933 kgs of hemp, 12,917 bottles of foreign wine and 1,333,638 litres of liquor across the country. Of them, 70.80 lakh Yaba tablets were seized from Chittagong alone.
