At least 28 people were killed and about 70 seriously injured in separate road accidents in 12 districts across the country on Saturday.
Of the accidents, seven people are killed in Tangail, while four in Bogura, three in Sirajganj, two in Brahmmanbaria, three in Mymensingh, two each in Gazipur and Habiganj, and one each in Dhaka and Nilphamari districts. Besides, over 70 people were admitted several hospitals with serious injuries in connection with the road accidents.
In Tangail: at least seven people including two children were killed in two separate road accidents of the district.
Four people were killed and 15 others injured when a commuter bus crashed into a truck parked along the busy Dhaka-Tangail highway in Mirzapur upazila on Saturday morning.
The identities of the deceased could not be known immediately.
Molla Tutul, Officer-in-Charge of Gorai highway police station, said the accident occurred around 4:30am when a passenger bus ‘Binimoy Paribahan’ hit the parked sand-laden truck from behind in the Dulla Mansur area.
“The impact left three passengers dead on the spot and 16 others injured. The injured were rushed to Kumudini Hospital where one of them was declared dead on arrival,” he said.
On the other hand, three members of a family – mother, son and daughter – were killed after a speeding bus ran over them near the Pakulla area of the Dhaka-Tangail highway on Saturday afternoon.
The deceased are – Parveen Akhtar, 27, her daughter Sadia, 9, and son Suman, 7. They were residents of the district’s Mirzapur upazila.
Locals blocked the highway and demonstrated protesting the incident causing a huge tailback on the highway. They were heard chanting slogans demanding a foot over-bridge on the spot of the accident.
In Mymensingh: At least three people of a family were killed in Trishal of the district on Saturday noon.
The deceased were identified as-Jahangir Alam (42), his wife Ratna Begum (32) and daughter Sanjida (6).
The accident took place at Trishal Courtbuilding area on the Dhaka-Mymensingh highway at around 3pm.
Officer-in-Charge of Trishal Police Station Main Uddin said, deceased Ratna Begum was 7-month pregnant. They were killed on the spot after a truck ran over them during crossing the highway, he added.
In Bogura: Four people were killed and one was severely injured in a collision between a mini truck and a private car in Dargahat area on Bogura-Naogaon highway under Kahaloo upazila of the district on Saturday morning.
The deceased were identified as Tanser Ali, 60, his son Togor Ali, 35, from Dhamoirhat upazila of Naogaon district, Abdur Rahman, 35, and Sumon, 30, from Patnitala upazila of Naogaon district.
Another person named Shakil, 20, was sent to Shaheed Ziaur Rahman Medical College (SZMC) Hospital as he was severely injured in the accident.
Kahaloo Thana officer-in charge (OC) Ambar Hossain said, “The accident occurred around 8.30am on Bogura-Naogaon highway near Dargahat area. Three people died on the spot.”
Locals rescued Shakil and Abdur Rahim in a critical condition and rushed to the SZMC. Rahim died on his way to the hospital.
Police sources said the mini truck was seized and a search operation was launched to catch the driver as he managed to flee the spot.
In Brahmmanbaria: Two people were killed and four others injured in a road accident on the Cumilla-Sylhet highway in the Ujanisar area in Sadar Upazila of the district on Saturday noon.
The deceased were identified as the CNG driver Md Chan Mia, 50, and Billal Mia,45 son of Abdu Mia of Khadera Union of Kasba Upazila of the district.
Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Khantihata Highway Police Station Sukhendra Basu said, a microbus was going towards Cumilla on the way, a head-on collision with a CNG-run auto rickshaw coming from the opposite direction in the area this 12-noon, leaving six persons injured seriously.
Later, the injured were rescued and taken to Brahmanbaria 250-bed District Hospital, but two of them succumbed to their injuries at the hospital, the OC added.
In Dhaka: a young man, identified as Ibrahim Biswas, 24, who was going to Karwan Bazar for buying vegetables, died after a bus hit his rickshaw at Panthapath intersection early morning on Saturday.
The accident occurred around 3:45am, said Md Shahabuddin, sub-inspector at Shahbagh police station.
“Ibrahim used to look after the hotel business of his maternal uncle Kabir Hossain, in the Najira Bazar area of Dhaka.
“He met with the tragedy while he was on his way to buy vegetables,” the officer added.
In Sirajganj: three people were killed and 10 others injured after a bus hit a parked truck in Khalkula Bazaar area on Hatikumrul-Banpara road in Tarash upazila on Saturday afternoon.
The identity of the deceased could not be known immediately.
Hatikumrul highway police outpost OC Lutfor Rahman said the accident occurred around 1:45pm when a Dhaka-bound bus went into the wrong lane and rammed a parked truck.
The official said that the number of deaths may increase.
In Gazipur: two people were killed in two separate accidents in Basugaon and Sukundi bridge area of Pubail upazila.
A Leguna passenger Moniruzzaman (38) died on the spot when a truck hit the Leguna from opposite side at Basugaon in Pubail areas. At least 12 passengers were seriously injured and sent them to local hospitals for treatment after rescue.
On the other hand, Ibrahim Hossain (34) son of Idris Ali of Narsingdi died in Sukundibag bridge area under Pubail areas when two auto-rickshaws collided. Injured drivers of the two auto-rickshaws admitted to hospital for treatment.
In Nilpharami: a van puller was killed when a speeding truck knocked him down on Tengonmari-Mirganj road around 10:30am on Saturday.
The deceased was indentified as Ajijul Haque, 45, son of late Toiyob Ali.
Joldhaka police station Sub Inspector Nurul Haque confirmed the death.
In Patuakhali: At least 20 people were injured at Moukaran area on the Patuakhali-Barishal highway of the district. The accident took place when a passenger bus fall into a roadside ditch. The injured people were sent to Patuakhali Medical College and Hospital and Barishak Sher-e-Bangla Medical College for treatment.
In Chattogram: A woman died in Mirzarhaat area under Bhujpur Police Station of the district when a auto-rickshaw and Pickup van collided face to face.
The deceased was identified as Sharmin Akhter (28). Besides, three persons including Sharmin’s two children Mobarak (9) and Shompa Koli (12) were also injured following the accident. Sharmin is the wife of Abu Taher of Shoilokupa area.
In Dinajpur: A motorcycle biker killed in Khansama bazaar area of the district. The deceased was indentified as Zakir Hossain (26). He died when a truck hit his bike behind him near Brac Office of Khansama upazila.
In Jhinedah: A vegetable vendor killed when a truck hit him in Pirojpur area on the Jhinedah-Jashore Highway. The deceased was indentified as Lokman Hossain son of late Ajibor Rahman of Khosalpur village under Kaliganj upazila. The injured four people were also sent to upazila health complex for treatment.
In Habiganj: Two people died in Nabiganj when a passenger bus hit a CNG driven auto-rickshaw. The identities of the deceased could not be known immediately.
According to Officer-in-Charge of Sherpur Highway Police Parimol Dev, a Sylhet bound passenger bus Mitali Paribahan hit the auto-rickshaw and they died on the spot.
