259 killed in road crashes in 13 days

About 237 road crashes claimed at least 259 lives and injured 960 others in 13 days before and after the Eid-ul-Azha, a survey report said it on Friday.
Bangladesh Jatree Kalyan Samity compiled the report and revealed it in a press conference at Dhaka Reporters’ Unity in the capital.
The report said that a total of 278 people were killed and 1,035 others injured in 270 road, railways and waterways accidents between August 16 and August 28.
It said, 15 people were killed and seven more injured being run over by running trains, while four were killed, 68 injured and eight more went missing in 14 waterways accidents.
The report was prepared based on reports published in different national and regional dailies and online news portals.
While presenting his speech, former adviser to a caretaker government and convener of SROTA, Hossain Zillur Rahman, said lack of accountability and reckless attitude were the main reasons behind road accidents.
He also alleged that conflict of interest in road transport sector was another main problem,
s senior transports leaders were policy makers also.
Mozammel Haque Chowdhury, the Secretary General of the Jatree Kalyan Samity placed 10-point recommendations to reduce road accidents.
To form road safety unit in the Road Ministry, to build skilled drivers at the government managed training centers and to search the causes of road accidents and prevent those, were included among those points.
