The Petrobangla has provided gas connection to only 109 industries units against 2500 applications for the last four years in the country.
As a result, the investors of 2000 industries could not start their production in the schedule time. Meanwhile, some of them have become bank loan defaulters.
The government imposed ban on household and industrial gas connections several times during the period due to shortfall of gas generation in the country.
At present 2250mmcfd gas is being generated daily in the country against the demand of 2950mmcfd that means 600mmcf gas deficit daily.
Though the government has taken different initiates in last five years to increase gas generation and exploration of new gas field, the result is not satisfactory. The International Oil Companies (IOCs) had shown poor respond in the bidding of exploring gas in the Bay, said an official of Petrobangla yesterday not to be named.
The IOCs claimed more benefits including selling gas to third country despite the government increased the gas price several times. This is why there is no satisfactory result in oil and gas exploration in the country’s offshore yet, said the official.
As a result, over 2000 applications for industrial gas connection have been
piled up with the different gas distribution entities.
Official sources said, in the last four years gas connection has provided to only 109 industries and 81 captive power plants.
Though about 2000 entrepreneurs have submitted applications for nearly one to three years ago, they are yet get gas connection from Titas Gas Distribution Company due to short supply of gas.
State Minister for Power, Energy and Mineral Resources Nasrul Hamid said, it’s a long process to develop a gas well and supplying it to pipe line. The government has awarded different gas blocks for exploring, so it will take some time, he said.
“We are hopeful to give good news about the country’s gas reserve, but it will take some more time,” he said.
The government has taken a decision to import Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) and Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) as alternative to gas and the investors will get priority to LNG and LPG supply, the minister said.
