Twenty-five of the 51 Bangladesh missions abroad have failed to achieve respective export targets for the first 10 months (July-April) of the current fiscal (2013-14).
The key Bangladesh missions like the ones in Washington, London, Paris, Ottawa, Tokyo and Canberra which failed to achieve their July-April export targets while some other important missions-Berlin, Madrid, Rome, The Hague and Stockholm – have been able to reach their targets for the 10-month period.
The overall export earnings for the July-April period of the current fiscal amounted to US$ 24,654.39 million against the strategic target of $ 24,555.55 million, having a growth of 0.40 percent over the strategic target.
Of the 51 Bangladesh missions, 26 met their respective export targets for the July-April period of the current fiscal (FY14), according to the latest statistics provided by the Export Promotion Bureau (EPB).
The 26 well-performing missions are the ones in Berlin, Madrid, Rome, The Hague, Stockholm, Brussels, Ankara, Beijing, Seoul, Jakarta, Cairo, Hanoi, Amman, Kuwait, Colombo, Doha, Yangon, Tashkent, Manama, Thimpu, Beirut, Lisbon, Male, Tripoli, Brunei and Port Louis.
Of the 25 missions that could not achieve their targets for the first 10 months of the current fiscal, exports still marked a rise for 13 of them over the corresponding period of the last fiscal (2012-13). These missions are in Washington, London, Paris, Tokyo, Riyadh, Canberra,Ottawa, Singapore, Geneva, Mexico City, Moscow, Kuala Lumpur and Muscat.
However, 12 missions – New Delhi, Hong Kong, Dubai, Bangkok, Tehran, Katmandu, Pretoria, Islamabad, Nairobi, Brasilia, Manila and Rabat-saw exports decline during the July-April period of the current fiscal compared to the same period of the last fiscal (2012-13).
The EPB figures revealed that out of the 17 Bangladesh missions having commercial wings, only five have achieved their export targets while 12 others could not achieve their respective targets.
The five missions with commercial wings, which achieved their respective export target, are in Berlin, Madrid, Brussels, Beijing and Yangon.
Although the remaining 12 commercial wings could not achieve the target, the earnings of nine of them still saw increase over the 2012-13 fiscal. These are in Washington, London, Paris, Tokyo, Ottawa, Geneva, Canberra, Moscow and Kuala Lumpur.
The 26 Bangladesh missions that succeeded in achieving their targets for the July-April period of the current fiscal accounted for $ 11,392.99 million while the export earnings of the remaining 25 missions, which failed to achieve their target, totalled $ 12,646.55 million.
The highest earnings over the 10-month period, some $ 4,649.60 million – almost one-fifth of total exports – were registered by the Washington mission, followed by the mission in Berlin which accounted for $ 4,154.63 million and London $ 2,577.42 million.
The strong showing from EU member states continued with the Madrid mission fetching $ 1,297.17 million during the July-April period.
The next was the Bangladesh mission in Italy, which earned almost $ 1070.20 million, followed by missions in Ottawa and The Hague, with approximately $ 892.26 million and $ 1153.03 million respectively. The New Delhi mission managed to fetch only $ 333.91 million.
