24km long tailback in Sirajganj

At least 24-km long tailback was witnessed at various points on the Dhaka-Sirajganj highway on Friday, while the homebound passengers went into untold sufferings.
Due to heavy traffic on the road from dawn on Friday, vehicles were plying on the road from Bangabandhu Bridge Western side’s round square to Hatikumrul till filing the report at 8pm.
Sirajganj district traffic inspector Abul Ala Moudud told this correspondent that the tailback emerged due to problems on a bridge in Chandaikona area and road accidents in Panchlia.
He, however, said that though there is traffic pressure on the highway now, but the situation is becoming normal gradually.
Meanwhile, traffic pressure on the Tangail-Bangabandhu Bridge highway has increased since last night. Gradually it is increasing.
The police are working relentlessly to make the journey of homebound people uninterrupted. They are divided into four sectors of the road and are working at different points.
Elenga police outpost in charge Ataur Rahman said, the pressure of the vehicle is increasing gradually. He, however, said that the traffic did not stop anywhere as police are working on the road.
Meanwhile, about 33,053 vehicles have so far crossed the Bangabandhu Bridge in the last 24 hours, the Bridge over the River Jamuna in Tangail is the only gateway for the people of North Bengal.
According to Bridge authority, a total of Tk 2,08,29500 has been realised as toll in the same period.
The pressure of traffic is gradually increasing and toll is being collected at 18 points on both sides of the toll plaza on the east and
west banks of the bridge to avoid traffic congestion on the road, Bangabandhu Bridge authority sources said.
According to sources, a total of 52,768 vehicles crossed the river during last Eid, which is the record for the highest number of vehicles so far crossed after inauguration of the Bangabandhu Bridge.
