A total of twenty-four fishermen were jailed and fined during a drive for catching jatka fish from the Padma and Meghna rivers of the district last night. The mobile court also seized jatka fish and one lakh meters of current nets from their possession.
The mobile court, led by executive magistrate Abida Sifat of Chandpur Deputy Commissioner’s Office and Chandpur Navel Police station, conducted a
drive from 10pm on Sunday to Monday afternoon in different areas on the Padma and Megna rivers in the district, reports BSS.
During the drive, around 30 fishermen were arrested and one lakh-meter of current nets and 100-kg of jatka fish were seized from their possession.
said Chandpur Naval Police Station in-charge sub-inspector (SI) Zahirul Islam.
Of the arrested, 23 fishermen were sentenced to one-year rigorous imprisonment while one fisherman was sentenced to one-year imprisonment and
fined taka one thousand. The remaining six fishermen were released after
signing bond due to their young age.
The seized nets were destroyed by fire on the banks of the river and the
jatka fish were distributed among the local orphanages and destitute people,
the SI added.
