Twenty-four Bangladeshis have returned to Bangladesh after serving sentences in Myanmar jails.
Myanmar’s Border Guard Police (BGP) returned the Bangladeshi nationals to the Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) after a flag meeting held in Maungdaw of Rakhine State in Myanmar at 1:30pm on Tuesday.
BGB Teknaf 2 Battalion Commander Lt Col Md Faisal Hasan Khan led the nine-member team on behalf of the BGB and on the other hand, BGP Maungdaw Sector Commander Lt Col J Lee Aung led the six-member team on behalf of Myanmar’s BGP at the meeting held at BGP Maungdaw Sector 4 office.
After the flag meeting, Myanmar’s border security force handed over the Bangladeshi nationals to the BGB.
After returning to Teknaf Jetty with Bangladeshi nationals, Lt Col Faisal Hasan Khan told reporters that the Bangladeshi nationals were detained by Myanmar BGP and Myanmar Navy while crossing the Naf River for fishing and on their way to Malaysia by sea.
They were later sentenced to jail on various terms by Myanmar courts. When their jail sentences were over, the Myanmar authorities returned the Bangladeshi nationals through a flag meeting, he added.
Among the returnees, 12 are from Teknaf in Cox’s Bazar, six are from Rangamati district, three are from Bandarban district and three are from Banshkhali upazila of Chittagong.
He also added that arrangements had been made to send the returnees to their respective villages through the administration in compliance with health guidelines.
