Customs officials in a raid seized at least 23kg of gold bars and ornaments worth around Tk 12 crore after scanning a ‘special model belt’ of a passenger at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport (HSIA) on Wednesday night.
They also detained the passenger in connection with the gold smuggling during the raid, said HM Ahsanul Karim, Assistant Commissioner of Dhaka Customs House.
The arrested man has been identified as Md Ataul Majid, 32, a passenger of Singapore Airlines, he said.
The flight SQ446 of Singapore Airlines landed at the airport around 11:00pm, the Customs official said.
“Getting information, Custom officials challenged Majid when he was crossing the green channel of the airport in a wheelchair. Searching the special model belt of Majid, Customs officials recovered 225 gold bars and some ornaments,” he said.
A case has been filed with the Airport Police Station in this connection, he added.
