231 more Covid deaths, 14,844 new cases

Bangladesh reported another 218 deaths from Covid-19 in last 24 hours till 8am Sunday, taking the death toll to 20,916. On the other hand, the total caseload stood at 12,64,328 as 14,844 more tested positive for the virus during the same time.
It was said in a press release signed by professor Nasima Sultana, Additional Director General (Administration) of DGHS.
The highest 77 deaths were reported in Dhaka division while 53 died in Chattogram division in the preceding 24 hours. Among the dead, 139 were male and 92 were female.
DGHS said 29.97 percent of the 49,529 samples collected in 24 hours were tested positive.
The recovery count rose to 10,93,266 after another 15,054 patients were discharged from the hospitals during the same time.
The DGHS statistics showed of the people infected from the beginning, 86.47 percent recovered, while 1.65 percent died.
Meanwhile, the coronavirus outbreak in Bangladesh has already claimed more lives in July than any other month so far since the pandemic began.
Almost 6,182 people have lost their lives to Covid-19 in the month (July) up to Saturday, according to the daily health bulletin of Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS). It said, in the last six months from January to June this year, 6,944 people died of Covid-19.
Besides, detection of Covid-19 cases was also highest in July. In the last six months, a total of 3,99,778 people have been contracted Covid-19. But in July alone, 3,36,226 new patients have been identified.
On Saturday (July 31), 218 Covid-19 deaths and 9,369 cases were reported. Earlier, daily highest 258 Covid-19 deaths and 14,925 cases were reported on Tuesday (July 27).
Vaccination
As of Sunday morning, around 4.298 million people have received the second dose of the Oxford-AstraZeneca Covid-19 vaccine, while about 1.52 million have only received the first dose and are awaiting the second one.
Moreover, 212,163 people received their first dose of the Sinopharm vaccine in the last 24 hours, taking the total to 2,248,106 to date, while another 9,128 people received their second jab of the Chinese vaccine.
Meanwhile, 20 more people were administered the first dose of the Pfizer vaccine, taking the total to 50,255. A total of 774 people received their second dose of the vaccine in the last 24 hours.
Besides, another 72,542 people received the first dose of Moderna’s Covid-19 vaccine, taking the total to 687,681.
Bangladesh reported its first three cases of Covid-19, a severe acute respiratory illness caused by a strain of coronavirus later named Sars-CoV-2, on March 8 last year.
The fast-spreading coronavirus has claimed more than 4.23 million lives and infected over 198.7 million people across the world till Sunday afternoon, according to Worldometer.
More than 179.4 million people have recovered from the disease, which has affected 222 countries and territories across the planet.
