Thousands of people of Teesta River basin under the banner of Teesta Bachao Nodi Bachao Committee formed a 230 kilometers long human chain on Sunday morning on the two sides of the river at Rangpur, Lalmonirhat, and Nilphamari districts demanding to protect erosion, excavation of the river, and proper share of water.
People of the Rangpur district took part in the human chain near Mohipur Teesta bridge area, Gongachara, and Kawnia Teesta bridge point.
Leaders of the Teesta Bachao Nodi Bachaw Committee said, thousands of people of the river side become homeless and landless due to the unabated river erosion every year. Teesta is the most important river in the northwest of Bangladesh. It has been flowing some 115 kilometers area in the Bangladesh side.
Farmers in northern districts depend on underground water for irrigation.
In the dry season, the flow of waterfalls becomes extremely short due to lack of water flow from upstream India. India’s unilateral withdrawal of water from upstream has severely affected farming and biodiversity in the region.
Teesta used to flow all year round. But there is not enough water in the dry and winter season for optimal agriculture now a days. During monsoon, India opens the sluice gates of the barrage in the upstream causing floods and erosion in the downstream, Bangladesh side every year.
It turns into a canal for not dredging the river bed for many years. So, it is necessary to dredge the river bed or excavate to remove the sediment in order to revive the water flow and to protect the erosion. Speakers also demanded compensations for erosion hit families across the riversides. They also urged Prime Minister’s intervention in this regard.
Teesta Bachao, Nodi Bachao movement, Rangpur Divisional Committee president, Principal Nazrul Islam Haqqani, Secretary, Safiur Rhaman, members, Tuhin Wadud and Nuruzzaman Khan, Shafiqul Islam Kanu, Mozaffor Hossain, Mahabub Alam, Aminur Islam, Sadequl Islam Dulal and Abdur Nur addressed the rally at different points.
