Some 230 government primary schools of Khulna city and of nine upazilas of the district were identified as dilapidated and risky ones.
It is matter of great concern that the concerned authorities do not know where the classes are being conducted.
Some officials are declined to talk to the journalists in respect of this matter and some others are blaming Upazila education officers, according to the sources of district education office.
It is learnt that there are 1299 government primary schools in Khulna city and at nine upazila areas of Khulna district among which 230 are dilapidated and risky ones for conducting classes. Among these the schools buildings of 29 in Khulna Sadar, 29 in Koyra, 57 in Dumuria, 25 in Terokhada, 12 in Dakop, 4 in Digholia, 23 in Paikgachha, 18 in Phultala, 20 in Batiaghata and 13 government Primary Schools in Rupsha upazila are risky and dilapidated ones. But it is matter of great regret that Khulna district education officer and upazila education officers do not know where the classes are being conducted.
Mentionable here that under the light of the memorandum of Khulna Primary Education Directorate according to the reference Number -J Pra Shika/Khu/827/10, the list of the risky government Primary Schools were made which were sent to the directorate on April 9, 2019.
Paikgachha upazila education officer Gazi Saiful Islam said, I wouldn’t like to comment anything regarding the list of risky school buildings. He advised to collect information from Khulna district education office.
Chaina Rani Datta, Phultala upazila education officer said, classes are taken in risky buildings since there are no sufficient places here.
Muhammad Abul Kashem, Rupsha upazila education officer said, We are being compelled to conduct classes in risky buildings without getting any other alternatives.
Terokhada Upazila Education Officer Sheikh Monirul Islam said, All schools are not equal, those buildings are partly well, classes will be taken there. But he could not say about the conducting of classes at risky school buildings.
Journalists could not contact the education officers of Khulna Sadar Thana, Dumuria, Digholia and Batiaghata upazilas.
M. Sirajuddoha, Khulna District Education Officer said, I don’t know where the classes are taken at risky dilapidated school buildings, upazila education officers can say regarding this. He said adding that lists were sent to the directorate of education and this is their matter.
Imparting lessons to around 157 students of 46 No. Arjuna Balardhana Government Primary School in Arjuna, a remote village in Terokhada Upazila of Khulna district is badly hampered as the risky building became abandoned 10 years ago. The students of this school attending their classes under a dilapidated tin-shed house only in two rooms. Teachers and students always are in fear of snake-bite as this tin-shed house is also a risky one.
Sources said, The school was declared abandoned at least 10 years ago. For this reason, teachers have been taking classes in two rooms of a dilapidated tin-shed house. Teachers, guardians and members of the School Managing committee had built this tin-shed house at the North side of the school. Only 4 teachers have been taking classes amid acute risk and enduring severe difficulties for the last ten years. Teachers and students are always in fear of snake-bite as snakes often enter into the tin-shed rooms
It is also learnt that some snakes have built their nests in the teachers’ common room. Recently a female teacher named Nazma Begum rescued from the bite of snake. A snake was found under the chair of this teacher. Local people killed three snakes in the mean time and a snake-charmer took away a snake. However, fear of snake has not yet removed from the teachers and students.
Meanwhile, a teacher and a student became injured seriously due to falling plasters from the dilapidated roof of the tin-shed school.
During a recent visit, this correspondent found that the teachers were teaching the students in a dilapidated tin-shed house which might collapse at any time..
“We are taking classes in two rooms of a dilapidated tin-shed house amid risks of collapsing and also the fear of snake, as we have no alternative”, said a teacher of the school.
“I am very much worried as my child doesn’t want to attend classes in such an environment”, said Sultan Ahmed, a guardian.
Built in 1945, the school building developed cracks on walls due to lack of renovation.
The toilets of the school are not suitable at all for using, lack of playing ground and crisis of drinking water are also acute problems, said some guardians. Besides, there is no suitable way for coming and going for the students.
Members of the school managing committee said, as the school authorities informed the matter to the concerned authorities, engineers of the facilities department and the local government engineering department visited the school and after checking, they declared the building abandoned ten years ago.
4 teachers including the acting Headmaster are now conducting 6 classes including infant class only in two rooms of a dilapidated tin-shed house enduring acute sufferings.
Milon Kumar Mozumdar, Headmaster of the school said. We have been taking classes amid risk of school building collapse and fear of snakes, our students are attending classes in a risky tin-shed house even during this ongoing heat wave and heavy rainfall.
