Bangladesh has been grappling with a massive outbreak of dengue this year. A large number of patients put a severe strain on the country’s overwhelmed medical system.
The government said 91,579 people were hospitalised with dengue since the beginning of the year. Of them, 90,104 recovered fully.
The Institute of Epidemiology, Disease Control and Research (IEDCR) confirmed the deaths of 93 dengue patients after reviewing 151 reports out of 242.
Dengue, a mosquito-borne viral infection, causes flu-like illness, and occasionally develops into a potentially lethal complication called severe dengue.
According to WHO, about half of the world’s population is now at risk.
WHO says there is no specific treatment for dengue or severe dengue but early detection and access to proper medical care lowers fatality rates below one percent.
