Deputy Commissioner Imtiaz Ahmed (Mirpur Zone) of Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) said that a special team of police conducted a drive in the city’s Mirpur-10 area and arrested one Sadeq alias Akbar along with a stolen motorcycle from in front of United Commercial Bank on July 6 (Sunday).
Acting on Sadeq’s statement, the police team later arrested one Atiqur Rahman at Jessore district town the same day, he added.
Based on their statements, the police team conducted simultaneous drive in different areas of Satkhira on Monday (July 7) and recovered 224 motorbikes from a godown on the day, the police official said.
During the drives, police also arrested 13 more people for their alleged involvement in the motorbike stealing, he added.
Imtiaz Ahmed said this was the biggest recovery of stolen motorbikes by the Dhaka Metropolitan Police in the recent history.
He informed that the organized syndicate was involved in committing the crime, divided into four segments.
One gang was involved in hijacking or stealing motorbikes, while the second gang was assigned to procure legal documents from the motorcycle owners whose bikes were hijacked or stolen, the DC said.
The responsibility of the third group of the syndicate was to tamper with the engine or chassis after collecting the stolen bikes and the fourth gang was assigned to keep the stolen motorbikes in a showroom, he said.
“We have been able to arrest a few of them. We’re trying to arrest rest of the syndicate members,” said Imtiaz.
