BSS, Khulna :
The southwestern Khulna has set a target of yielding 2,24,417 tonnes of Aman in the current year as plantation of two varieties of the major crop is underway in the district, agriculture officials said yesterday.
“Transplantation of Aman seedling (Bree-23) or Upshy and the local variety of the Aman is going on in full swing in all the nine upazilas in the district,” Deputy Director of Agriculture Extension Department (DAE), Abdul Latif told BSS.
He said the DAE set a target to produce 2,24,417 tonnes of Aman this year, 1,82,953 tonnes being the Upshy and the rest being the local variety.
Latif said a total of 92,442 hectors of land were brought under the coverage of the Aman cultivation, of which 67,312 hectors were earmarked for Upshy cultivation.
He said seedlings were already planted in 80 percent of the land and the sowing process would be completed in next two weeks.
The officials said floodwaters damaged seedlings in some places but Bangladesh Agriculture Development Corporation (BADC) distributed extra 10 tonnes of seedlings to overcome the situation.
