At least 224 families, who were victims of the June 2 arson incident in Langadu upazila, have been provided with financial assistance worth Tk 40 lakh.
The assistance was jointly provided by the Ministry of Social Welfare, Rangamati District Administration and UNDP.
Deputy Commissioner (DC) of Rangamati Mohammad Manzarul Mannan distributed the financial assistance at a programme organised at the upazila parishad auditorium on Tuesday morning.
Among others, Langadu Upazila Parishad Chairman Tofazzal Hossen, and UNDP representative Juma Dewan spoke at the function. Upazila Nirbahi Officer Mosaddek Mehedi Imam presided over the function.
The speakers said, people of all communities and small ethnic groups living in Rangamati have long lived in peace and harmony, but some vested quarters are trying to destroy this.
DC Mohammad Manzarul Mannan said, “Legal action has been taken against those involved in the violent incident of June 2. Besides giving assistance, the government has taken initiatives to foster them properly. Homesteads are being constructed under the scheme of Ashrayan Project for the affected families.”
On the occasion, 176 severely affected families were given Tk 20,000 each, and 48 partly damaged families were given Tk 10,000 each.
Various officials of different government offices, union parishad chairmen, headmen, and political party leaders were present on the occasion.
