Police have arrested a member of a gold smuggling gang during a search in the new railway station area under Kotwali police station in the city. About 221 loads of gold were found in his possession.The arrested Uttam Sen (35) is a resident of Patenga Mahajanghata and son of late Manik Sen.Kotwali Police Station OC Mohammad Mohsin told the media that police arrested a member of the smuggling ring along with gold on Friday last at around 5.30pm as the movement was suspicious.
A search of Uttam Sen’s body turned up 14 gold bars weighing 221 tolas wrapped in black scotch tape.
Tactically he hid these gold bars inside his pants pocket where he was wearing a belt. Under interrogation, he confessed of taking the gold from Chattogram to Dhaka. ‘OC Mohsin said the gold bars were given to him by a businessman named Sanjit Dhar (38) to take him to Dhaka for smuggling.
A case has been filed against the accused under the Special Powers Act for smuggling gold.
