22 protester students granted 2-day remand

The court has granted two days remand of 22 students of private university in two separate cases of attack on police and vandalism.
Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Abdullah Al-Masud ordered this on Tuesday in response to the petition by police.
The arrestees are private university students of East West, North South, Southeast and BRAC. Among them, Badda Police Station sent 14 students and Bhatara police sent eight students seeking seven-day remand.
At 3:00PM at the court’s court, the students fell unconscious after seeing their guardians and relatives crying. Their lawyers claimed the court that police tortured the students in custody. Police arrested them on their way to home after classes, the lawyers further claimed.
However, Badda Police Station’s investigation officer Julhas Mia said in the court that at around 12:30 pm on Monday the students of East West University and other universities blockede Aftab Nagar main gate and Rampura Road. They involved in vandalism on the street with sticks and bricks. The students attacked police while they were trying to control the situation. So, it is necessary to interrogate them in remand.
Police also told the court that the accused vandalized the car of Badda Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC). When they tried to set fire to the Badda police faction, police fired tear shells to bring the situation under control.
On the other hand, investigating officer of the case Bhatara Police Station SI Hasan Masud said, the accused attacked the police with iron rods, iron pipes and bricks at Apollo Hospital and North South University area of Bashundhara residential area. The accused vandalized the shops, business establishments, home doors, windows around the venue from 11am to 6:30 pm. They need interrogation on the remand.
Defense lawyer AKM Mohiuddin Faruk told the court that the police arrested innocent students and tortured them with horrendous torture.
Kabir Hossain, lawyer of East West University student Ridwan Ahmed, told the court, “The police tortured Ridwan in the police station and broke a finger of Redwan. Police arrested the innocent instead of arresting the third group who were involved in vandalism.
Besides, the defense lawyers told the court that the examination of students arrested in East West University is going on. They are on 9th August. If they do not get bail, their education life will be severely damaged.
The arrested student Masad Matruza Bin Ahad, Fayez Ahmed Adnan and Azizul Hakim told the court that the police beat up the students at the police station. However, the police, claimed that they were slightly injured due to the confrontation during the arrest. They were treated at the local hospital.
The 14 students arrested in the Badda case are Risaltul Ferdous, Redwan Ahmed, Rashedul Islam, Bayezid, Mushfiqur Rahman, Iftekhar Ahmed, Reza Rifat Azzlak, AHM Khalid Reza, Tariqul Islam, Noor Mohammad, Border Government, Iqtidar Hossain, Zahidul Haque and Hasan. The students arrested in the case of Bhatara Police Station are Azizul Karim, Masad Mertuza Bin Ahad, Fayez Ahmed Adnan, Saber Ahmed, Mehdi Hasan, Shihab Shahriar, Sakhawat Hossain and Aminul Ehsan
