22 killed in lightning in 11 districts

At least 22 people, including two siblings in Mymensingh, Narayanganj, Brahmanbaria, Chandpur, Sunamganj, Kurigram, Gaibandha and Jhenaidah districts were killed in lightning on Tuesday.
Three people were killed in Mymensingh, three in Jhenaidah, two in Brahmanbaria, one in Kurigram, one in Gaibandha, two in Narayanganj, two in Chandpur, one in Gopalganj, one in Sirajganj one in Habigan and two in Sunamganj district, according to our correspondents.
In Mymensingh, two siblings were killed when a lightning struck them at Rauti village in Dhobaura upazila of the district on Tuesday.
The deceased were identified as Asad Mia, 45 and Ingraj Mia, 40, sons of Abdul Malek. Officer-in-Charge of Dhobaura Police Station, Shawkat Alam, said the lightning struck them while they were working at their paddy field in the area, leaving the two dead on the spot.
Besides, a student of Class Nine was killed in lightning strike when he was playing football in the Zilla School playground Tuesday afternoon. In Narayanganj, a man and a woman were killed in separate lightning incidents in Araihazar upazila of the district on Tuesday afternoon. The deceased were identified as Subeda Begum, 42, and Jamil Hossain, 47.
When contacted, Sakhawat Hossain, Officer-in-Charge of Araihazar Police Station confirmed the death news saying they died around noon when lightning hit them.In Brahmanbaria, a housewife identified as Khodeza Begum, 30, was killed when lightning storm struck her at village Srighar under Nabinagar upazila of the district.
Besides, a youth was killed in lightning at village Paikarchar under Banchharampur upazila of the district.
The deceased was identified as Shahabuddin, 35, son of Mohammad Akkas Miah. The lightening struck him while he was cultivating land. He received serious injuries and was rushed to the Banchharampur where he succumbed to his injuries.
In Chandpur, a mother and her son were killed when lightning struck them.The deceased have been identified as Selina Begum, 40, and her son Yeasin Sarder, 15, of Dhalikandi village.
In Kurigram, Anwar Hossain, 42, was killed at village Ambari under Rowmari upazila of the district.
Local people said lightning struck Anwar Hossain when he was catching fish in the river killing him on the spot.
In Gaibandha, a youth identified as Nabo Chandra, 27, a van driver, was killed at village Piargaon when he was returning home. Son of Prema Chandra, Nabo Chandra died on the spot.
In Jhenaidah, at least three people were killed in separate strikes under Harinakundu and Kaliganj upazila of the district.
The deceased were identified as Miraz Hossain, 50, son of Younus Ali of Poltadanga village, and Amanullah, 40, son of Emdadul Huq of village Amerchar under Harinakundu upazila.
Besides, a housewife identified as Anzura Begum, 45, wife of Fashiar Rahman, was killed when lightning struck her at village Monnadanga under Kaliganj upazila on Tuesday.
In Sunamganj, Shamim Pathan, 34, from Durloverchar village in Jamalganj upazila, and Abul Layes, 44, from Kizirgaon village in Chhatak upazaila were killed in separate incidents of lightning, reports our local correspondent.
Last year Bangladesh had seen a near-record number of deaths that appeared to be worsening with climate change. Most lightning deaths usually occur during the months from March to July.
