Huge drugs are entering into the country from across the border in Lalmonirhat district and these are being supplied to different parts of the country by buses, trucks, trains, micro-buses, pick-vans ambulances.
Strong syndicates of drug smugglers have been formed at 22 border areas at five upazilas of the district controlling the drugs include phensydyl, hemp, wine even heroin smuggling from the neighbour country India everyday, bordering people said adding Durgapur and Mogholhat borders have been turned into the safe zone for drug smugglers.
Huge drugs include 4,289 bottles wine, 7,772 bottles phensydil and 3,083 kgs hemp worth about Tk 1,08,85,150 were sized by Border Guard Bangladesh BGB in boirder areas in different times were destroyed in the premise of Lalmonirhat Govt College in the town on Thursday.
On the occasion of International Day against Drugs Abuse , a rally was also brought out and later a discussion was held in the college hall room arranged by jointly District Administration and District Narcotics Control Department.
Drug addicts on the rise in Sylhet
Sylhet Correspondent adds:The number of drug addicts is increasing alarmingly all over the district in the recent times. It is learnt from local sources that there are over 200 sale centres and sub-centers off illegal drugs all over the district. Of them, 90 centers are in Sylhet city alone. More than two lakh people, most of them young, are regular customers of drugs at the centres. Sale of narcotic items, including Phensidyl, ganja, foreign wine, heroin and Dandi, a kind of glue taken by drug addicts for its intoxicating effects, starts in the centers in the morning and continues till the late hours of night. Drug traders are doing their business at the points openly by managing a section of dishonest policemen. Prices of the drug items increased cashing in on increased consumption of those by youths on the eve of the Football World Cup.
Police and Narcotics Control Department also sized huge drugs and arrested drug sellers and addict and filed a number of cases during the time.
Station Road, Panirtenki, Railway station, Bharthkhola, Kodomtaly, Busterminal, Pulermuk, Chadinghat, Courtpoint, Kastoghor, Chhorarpar, Surmamarket, Dhorghagate, Badambagicha, Mirabazar, Mejortila, and Shibgonj are some of the drug points.
A large number of rickshaw pullers, women and children are also involved in drugs sale on commission basis. Drug traders are arrested by police and RAB and sent to jail. But after some days they are freed on bail from courts and start business again.
Sources said the local drug traders collect drugs mainly from Kanaighat and Tamabil border areas.
During his visit to different points, it was found that a section of black money holders invested a large amount of money in the business. It was also found that a section of youths were taking drugs openly at different points, including Sylhet Sylhet MAG Osmani Medical Collage. The drug syndicate here is very much strong with support of a section of local influentials
Police, RAB-8 and the Narcotics Control Department, however, in their special separate operations arrested 620 drug sellers and filed 500 cases against 1000 criminals here.
Police, RAB-8 and the Narcotics Control Department sources said during the time about 500 drug sellers and addicts were punished by mobile and general court in different part of the Sylhet and sent to jail.
