Bangladesh sent 22,59,786 workers abroad and received $50,421.27 million in remittance in the last three and a half years, according to official sources.
Bureau of Manpower Employment and Training (BMET) data shows around 520,490 workers got overseas jobs from January to June this year when they sent home $6,597.94 million.
Expatriates’ Welfare and Overseas Employment Minister Nurul Islam on Saturday told a training programme for BMET officials in the city that around 10 lakh workers would go overseas by the end of this year, which will be higher than any previous records. BMET organised the training programme for its senior officials.
Referring to fraudulent activities in manpower business, he suggested the officials concerned to be more active in creating awareness among the people so they choose the official channel for going overseas.
“The awareness campaign should be more intensive in rural areas,” the minister said. Currently, Bangladeshi workers are going to 159 countries, a BMET official said, adding that the efforts are underway to explore new markets for sending more workers from the country.
The official said the government is also constructing 439 technical training centres at the upazila level for developing more skilled manpower.
