Sushashoner Jonno Nagorik (Sujan), a civil society platform working for good governance, on Friday said some 219 mayor candidates out of a total of 904 for municipality elections are accused in different criminal cases.
“The 219 accused criminals include 36 murder case accused, seven from ruling Awami League (AL), 15 from Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) and 14 others from different political parties,” said Sujan General Secretary Badiul Alam Majumder at a press conference at Dhaka Reporters’ Unity in city on Friday.
Besides, he said, some 25 per cent mayor candidates have not crossed high school education.
According to the statistics provided by the Election Commission, the number of total mayoral contestants now stands at 904 in 234 municipalities after the withdrawal of candidature on December 13.
Of them, 652 candidates got tickets from 20 political parties, while the remaining 271 are independent ones.
Among the contenders, 221 belong to ruling AL, 206 to BNP, 73 to Jatiya Party (Ershad), 56 to Islami Andolan Bangladesh, 20 to Jatiya
Samajtantrik Dal, 17 to NPP and 32 to 14 other political parties.
“We are expressing grave concern over the situation as the political partiers have given nomination to the persons involved in various criminal cases. How and in what way the political parties can nominate the accused persons for contesting the mayor posts,” he asked.
Apart from these, Badiul Alam said of the total 904 candidates, some 652 are businessmen.
“The Election Commission remained silence as this Constitutional body has not been seen yet to take any action against these irregularities. Being experienced in the past, question has already been raised whether the EC will be able to hold a free, fair and credible poll,” he said.
