Lal Jamin, a monodrama narrating the history of Liberation War through the eyes of a teenage girl during the Liberation War of Bangladesh in 1971 and its aftermath, has been staged for 207th time on Monday as part of its nationwide shows patronised by Cultural Affairs Ministry at the Central Auditorium of Jagannath University (JnU). The show was open for all.
Scripted by renowned theatre personality Mannan Hira and directed by Sudip Chakraborty, the play depicts the story of a girl barley fourteen to show the suppression of female freedom fighters and is a production of theatre troupe Shunyan. The brilliant performance by acclaimed theatre actor Momenta Chowdhury made the production exceptional one.
The drama tells the pathological days of the liberation war which revolves around a young girl whose untroubled days came to an unexpected end during the liberation war as her father left to fight in the war. She soon followed her father and became a freedom fighter herself to create a never ending identity.
Later, she got caught along with other freedom fighters by the Pakistani Occupation Army. They encage her till the war is over.
The drama was brought to the stage for the first time on May 19 in 2011 at Natmandal of Dhaka University and has already completed 207shows at home and abroad including countries like the USA, UK, Canada and India.
At the end of the show, a discussion was held. JnU Vice-chancellor Prof Dr Mizanur Rahman, JnU teachers’ Association President Prof Md Noor Mohammad, Md Alaptogin, Chairman of Fine Arts Department and students of different departments of the university enjoyed the drama and discussion meeting.
“I think such liberation war-based monodrama should be staged as many time as possible. After 47 years of independence, the girl asks all whether the spirit and values of the war have been upheld. The drama is full of inspiration for all which teaches us how to stay always with motherland during emergency time,’ said Prof Dr Mizanur Rahman, VC of the university.
