2,036 MW power to be added to national grid this year

The seven under construction power plants would go on operation for generating 2,036 megawatt (MW) electricity this year and the country would get 13,301 MW electricity.
With the new power production the government is expecting to generate 13,301MW power at the end of this year, which would bring 68 per cent of people under electricity across the country, according to a Power, Energy and Mineral Resources Ministry source.
The source said presently, country’s power plants produce 11,265 MW electricity.
Besides, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina led Awami League government has a target to generate 20,000 MW electricity by using 53 per cent coal as primary energy within the Vision 2021.
Currently power plants have been using 41 per cent natural gas as primary energy in the power sector in the country. The government has already taken various projects to improve power generation aimed at providing electricity to all citizens by 2021 at reasonable price.
The ministry source said the Meghnaghat 335MW Combined Cycle IPP (Independent Power Plant), sponsored by Summit Meghnaghat Power Company Ltd is expected to start its commercial operation in March.
Project Director of Ashuganj 200MW Modular Power Plant Ajit Kumar Sarkar today told BSS that the power plant, sponsored by United power would go on its production in March.
But the Ashuganj 225MW Combined Cycle Power Plant, jointly constructed by JV of Hyundai Engg. & Daewoo Int., Korea, would produce electricity from April, he added.
The ministry source, however, said the Shiddirganj 335MW Combined Cycle Power Plant, jointly constructed by Isolux Ingenieria S.A. and Samsung C&T Corporation would join its commercial production for electricity from August this year.
Another power plant Bibiyana-2, 341MW Combined Cycle IPP Power Plant, sponsored by Summit Bibiyana-II Power Company Ltd would go for operation this year, the source added.
