Malaysia’s immigration department has arrested 328 migrants including 204 Bangladeshis, in a crackdown on illegal immigrants. Among the arrested 204 are Bangladeshi nationals. The rest are citizens of Indonesia, Myanmar and India.
They were arrested at 10pm on Friday in the four-hour operation at a construction site in Jalan Imbi, reports local newspapers.
Malaysia’s Deputy Home Minister Datuk Seri Ismail Mohamed Said (pix) who participated in the operation said the arrested immigrants, aged between 22 and 63, comprised 204 Bangladeshis, Indonesians (108), Indian nationals (four), Myanmar nationals (nine), and others (three).
“I noticed that their living condition here is not so ideal. This matter will be immediately referred to the Ministry of Human Resources,” he said.
Ismail said stern action would also be taken against employers if the investigation found that foreign workers were doing jobs in sectors contrary to the jobs registered in their documents.
Malaysia is the third largest job market for Bangladeshi nationals. There are some 10 lakh Bangladeshis working in Malaysia. But Malaysia suspended hiring Bangladeshi workers in September, 2018 on allegation of malpractices in the recruitment process and high recruitment costs.
