A flash flood has inundated many low-lying areas of Habiganj district, leaving hundreds of people marooned.
The flooding has been created due to the rush of upstream water and damage to the Sonai River embankment.
The water flooded about 20 villages following the collapse of the embankment in some parts.
Many houses and crops on a vast tract of land went under floodwater. The flooding washed away many fish farms.
Sources said the Sonai River embankment was damaged at Alaboxpur and Mangalpur points, inundating many villages. The situation has aggravated due to recent precipitations, water-logging and the overflow of Khowai river.
Sources said the river is flowing 60cm above the danger level as India has opened the barrage.
Shops at Chowmohani and Montala bazaars under the upazila have been inundated, affecting public life in the areas.
Besides, hilly streams and intermittent rain are taking a heavy toll on human life and property in Harashpur, Madhabpur, Jagdishpur, Montola and Temunia areas.
Ponds and hatcheries have been flooded by the flashflood, causing huge losses to their owners. The Flood Forecasting and Warning Centre said Brahmaputra- Jamuna and Ganges-Padma Rivers are in the rising trend.
There is a chance of a medium to heavy rainfall in northeastern and southeastern parts of the country along with adjacent Indian parts in the next 48 hours, it said.
In the next 48 hours, major rivers of southeastern hilly region, including Chattogram and major rivers of Sylhet, Habiganj and Moulvibazar in the northeastern region may rise rapidly, it added.
Khowai River was flowing 145cm above the danger level, a flood forecasting bulletin said on Friday. The organisation monitored 94 rivers and registered rise of 41, fall of 41, steadiness of three, and above danger level of one.
In another development, Sylhet and some parts of southern region are at a great risk of inundation, as the water level in the Jamuna River is rising.
