20 thousand families of Sharankhola Upazila marooned with rain water

At least 20 thousand families of about 40 villages of four Unions, mainly Rauyenda and Southkhali Unions under Sharankhola Upazila, in Bagerhat district were marooned with the last two days’ (Thursday and Friday) incessant and torrential rainfalls. Almost all the houses of those villages went under knee-deep water. Many of those villagers cannot cook their food for the last two days as their cookers went under water. Not only that, the government food go-downs, hospital, educational institutions, post office, Roads and Highways are also under water.
According to an official source, different spices of fish of 1.5 thousand fish farms and ponds were washed away by the rain water. But according to the locals, the number of fish farms and ponds is more than that.
According to the Agriculture Extension Department, 20 thousand hectares paddy fields went under rain water. But the loss is yet to be ascertained. The locals believe, more than 20 thousand hectares of paddy field and other crops went under water.
More than one thousand poultry birds and ducks of a good number of poultry duck farms of the Upazila died following the incessant and torrential downpour, according to unconfirmed reports received here.
Sardar Mostafa Shahin, Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) of Sharankhola sought the help of the fire service and the local people to drain out the stagnant rain water from Rayenda bazar area (Upazila Headquarters of Sharankhola).
Mainul Islam Tipu, UP Chaairman of Dhansagar told the newsmen, dwelling houses belonging to several thousand people of 8 out of 10 villages of his Union were inundated with rain water. Those people cannot cook their food. So, they took the dry food for the last two days. According to the UP Chairman, some 700 poultry birds of a poultry farm belonging to one Nazrul Fakir and more than 200 ducks of one Manmata Kulu of his Union died due to the incessant and torrential rains. The UP Chairman added that fish worth Tk.20 lakh of UP member Tapu Biswas had been washed away by the rain water.
Asaduzzaman Milon, UP Chairman of Rayenda told, the rain water entered into some important government establishments like Post office, Telephone office, food go-downs, Rayenda Govt. Pilot High School, Rayenda Govt. Primary School. According to the UP Chairman, 10 thousand families of eight villages of his Union are the worst affected.
Md. Mozammel Hossain, UP Chairman of Southkhali told the newsmen, about 15 thousand families of 10 villages under my Union had been marooned with rain water. He added that fish of more than one hundred fish frames and one thousand ponds of his union had been washed away by the rain water.
Senior Fishery Officer of Sharankhola Upazila disclosed, according to primary assessment, fish of some one (1) thousand 4 hundred 50 registered fish farms and ponds were washed away by the rain water and the loss money is estimated to TK.1 cr. 40 lakh.
