TNN, Raipur :
Twenty security personnel, including 15 of the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF), were killed in a major Maoist ambush near Tongpal in Chhattisgarh’s Sukma district on Tuesday morning.
“Fifteen CRPF men belonging to 80th battalion and five of district force (DF) were killed
in Maoist attack while 44 others managed to escape unhurt”, additional director general of police (intelligence) Mukesh Gupta confirmed.
Police said a team of 80th battalion of CRPF and district force was part of a road opening party (ROP), which had left Tongpal on foot for patrolling, when the rebels triggered a powerful Improvised explosive device (IED) and later opened indiscriminate fire.
The incident took place near Tongpal, an area close to Jheeram Gathi, where senior Congress leaders were killed in Maoist ambush on May 25 last year. State Congress president Nandkumar Patel, former union minister V C Shukla and senior tribal leader Mahendra karma were among those killed in Maoist attack at Jheeram Gathi.
