Twenty members of ‘Jahangir Bahini’, an infamous robber gang, surrendered to Rapid Action Battalion (Rab) in presence of Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan at Rab headquarters in the district town on Sunday.
Those surrendered are- Md Jahangir Shikari, 38, chief of the gang, Sheikh Md Farid, 38, Md Maruf Sheikh, 41, Md Akram
Sheikh, 35, Md Mostahar Sheikh, 50, Md Ershad Sheikh, 35, Md Gazi Tarikul Islam, 35, Md Kamrul Sheikh, 22, Md Kamrul Hasan, 38, Md Haidar Sheikh, 29, Md Harun Sheikh, 55, Md Aiyub Ali Sheikh, 52, Md Mofikul Gazi, 38, Md Kabir Gazi, 32, Md Polash Hossain, 35, Md Baser Shikder, 26, Md Abdul Hannan Sarder, 23, Md Ezaj Mollah, 41, Md Mohosin Morol, 39, and Md Eakub Sarder, 29, hailing from different areas of Bagerhat and Jessore districts.
The gang members laid down 31 firearms and 1,507 rounds bullets, said Lt Col Faridul Alam, commanding officer of Rab-8. The robbers used to attack trawlers of fishermen and kidnap fishermen for ransom in deep forests of the Sundarbans adjacent to Shibsha river, Kateshwar and Sapkhali area under Satkhira range.
In the programme, the Home Minister assured the surrendered gang members that government will provide them all types of assistance to come back in normal life. Over the last eight months, a total of 92 members of nine robber gangs of the Sundarbans surrendered to law enforcers along with huge arms and ammunition.
