20-party backs BNP mayoral candidate in Comilla polls

The 20-party alliance on Thursday extended its support to BNP’s mayoral candidate Monirul Haque Sakku in Comilla City Corporation polls.
The decision was taken at a secretary general level meeting of the alliance at BNP’s Nayapaltan central office with its secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam in the chair, said a press release.
At the meeting, it said LDP secretary general Redwan Ahmed has been made coordinator of the BNP-led 20-party alliance’s election steering committee for the polls.
Earlier on Saturday night, BNP nominated immediate past Comilla City Corporation mayor Sakku to contest the upcoming mayoral election.
On 20 February, the Election Commission (EC) announced to hold the election of Comilla City Corporation on 30 March. The EC fixed March 2 for submitting nomination papers while the withdrawal of nominations till March 14. The meeting also protested the decision to raise gas and power prices, and urged the government to rescind the ‘anti-people decision’, the release added.
