At least 20 people have been killed in a mining accident in eastern Congo, South Kivu province’s Mining Minister Apollinaire Bulindi says.
Local officials said up to 40 people may have been buried in the gold mine in Nyange village following a landslide overnight.
The mine was believed to have operated legally, but to have employed some of its miners illegally.
Bulindi told DPA that a team of investigators had been sent to the village. Accidents are not unusual in Congolese mines, which often lack sufficient security measures. The central African country is rich in minerals including gold, cobalt, copper, diamonds, tin and tantalum.
