20 Jamaatmen taken on remand

A Dhaka Court yesterday placed 20 Jamaat-e-Islami leaders and activists including its student wing, Islami Chatra Shibir’s former president Shafikul Islam on a four-day remand each.
Mohammadpur Police Sub-Inspector Saiful Islam produced the accused to Dhaka’s Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Court on Sunday and sought a 10-day remand for each accused.
“After the remand hearing, Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate granted a four-day remand for each of the detained,” Dhaka police’s Additional Deputy Commissioner Mohammad Anisur Rahman told newsmen. Other accused are: Jamaat’s Mohammapur unit chief Ziaul Hasan, its Ward No. 44 chief Mahbubur Rahman, and activists Abbas Mia, Kamrul Hasan, Sagir, Lokman Hossain, Syed Ahmed Ali, Ibrahim, Al-Amin, Mahe Alam, Monir Hossain, Yusuf, Ibrahim Monir, Mazharul Islam Hira, Habib, Abdul Halim, Nur Amin, Monir Hossain and Mushfiq.
Mohammadpur Police detained them on Saturday night while they were holding a meeting in a house.
A case filed against them under the Special Power Act 1974 for holding a secret meeting as part of their alleged anti-government conspiracy.
