At least 20 leaders and activists of Awami League, including two policemen, were injured in a factional clash between two groups of Awami League at Chhai Community Centre in Dakkhin Surma upazila headquarters on Friday night.
Leaders and activists of Mahmudus Samad Chowdhury, Member of Parliament of Sylhet-3 constituency, and Habibur Rahman Habib, Relief Affairs Secretary of UK AL, locked into a clash around 8pm over delivering speech at a meeting of the upazila unit AL at the community centre, said Khairul Kabir, officer-in-charge of
Dakkhin Surma Police Station. During the fight, supporters of both the groups chased and counter-chased each other, leaving the 20 people injured. They also vandalised several motorcycles and a private car.
On information, police rushed to the spot and brought the situation under control firing at least 50 shots in the air, the OC added.
